What are the Work Abroad Programmes for Ghanaian Professionals?

The Work Abroad Programme for Ghanaian Professionals is designed to provide participants with valuable international experience, enhance their career prospects and contribute to national development.

During the presentation, YEA Director General Malik Bassintale highlighted the role of the programme in creating opportunities and building a bright future for young Ghanaians both locally and internationally. The collaboration with GIZ Ghana is expected to leverage global networks and expertise in job placement, enhancing the effectiveness of the program.

Important Details of the Ghanaian Work Abroad Program

- Targeted Workforce

The program is primarily designed for skilled workers in various sectors such as healthcare, engineering, construction and IT. The goal is to send skilled workers abroad to meet the demand for labor in countries experiencing shortages in these areas.

- Collaboration with Foreign Employers

Ghana collaborates with international employers and agencies to match the skills of their workers to the needs of foreign markets. The government works closely with host countries to ensure proper employment and legal protection for citizens.

- Economic Benefits

The program is seen as a way to reduce unemployment in Ghana as well as increase remittances. By sending workers abroad, the government hopes not only to reduce pressure on the local labor market but also to facilitate skills transfer, which can benefit the country in the long run.

- Training and Certification

To ensure that Ghanaians meet international labor standards, the program includes training and certification components. This phase is important for workers to upgrade their skills and prepare them for work abroad.

- Support and Monitoring

The Ghanaian government will provide support and monitoring for workers abroad, including legal assistance and ensuring fair treatment to protect the rights of workers abroad.

- Phased Approach

The first phase of the program will focus on selected occupations and a limited number of workers, with plans to expand over time. This will help assess the effectiveness of the program and address any issues that arise.

Why is the Ghanaian Professionals Overseas Program important?

The program is seen as a step towards addressing youth unemployment in Ghana and improving the country’s economic prospects. It also offers skilled workers the opportunity to obtain better wages and working conditions abroad, while contributing to the growth of Ghana’s prosperity through remittances.

Romania’s role in the Ghanaian Work Abroad Programme

Mr. Andre Petru Marin, CEO of Structural Precision SRL from Romania, confirmed Romania’s readiness to host Ghanaian workers and ensure their well-being.

“We have taken all necessary measures to ensure a smooth transition for each Ghanaian worker. Upon arrival, they will be transported to their place of residence, receive additional training and start their work,” he said.

Mr. Marin also assured that Ghanaian workers will receive fair working conditions, competitive wages and career development opportunities. He also recalled the historical ties between Ghana and Romania, highlighting the important role of Romanian engineers in the development of Ghana's infrastructure during the reign of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Training and Registration Process for the Program

To prepare the workers for their new roles, Dr. Pelpuo announced that the Management Development and Productivity Institute (MDPI) will conduct training for selected candidates.

“This training will equip participants with the necessary skills to adapt to the work environment while maintaining Ghana’s reputation for hard work and discipline,” he said.

The government has launched an online registration portal where interested applicants can submit applications, which will be selected based on clear eligibility criteria.

The Ghana Work Abroad Program is a strategic initiative aimed at addressing domestic labor challenges, supporting skilled workers and improving the country’s economic prospects through remittances and international cooperation.
