Thailand remains one of Asia’s most popular tourist destinations, but the cost of traveling to the country is gradually rising. Starting June 20, 2026, a new international airport tax rate will take effect—1,120 baht instead of the previous 730. The change applies to the six largest airports operated by Airports of Thailand (AOT).

How much will passengers have to pay, which airports are subject to the new rules, and where the additional funds will go—we’ll cover all of this in the article below.

New airport tax rate in Thailand: 1,120 baht per passenger

According to information from the Bangkok Post, the international airport tax in Thailand is increasing by more than 50%. Previously, passengers departing the country on international flights paid 730 baht. The new rate of 1,120 baht will take effect on June 20, 2026.

The departure tax is charged to all international passengers and is typically already included in the ticket price at the time of booking. The rate change applies exclusively to international flights—the rate remains unchanged for domestic passengers.

List of Thai airports where the increased fee will apply

The updated fee applies to six major Thai airports managed by AOT:

  • Suvarnabhumi Airport;
  • Don Mueang International Airport;
  • Chiang Mai International Airport;
  • Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport;
  • Phuket International Airport;
  • Hat Yai International Airport.

Among these airports are Bangkok’s main transportation hubs (Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang), as well as airports in the country’s most popular resort and tourist regions, including Phuket. The majority of international travelers pass through these six airports.

What the additional funds will be used for: AOT’s modernization plans

Airports of Thailand explains the fee increase by the need for large-scale infrastructure investments. The additional funding will be directed toward several key areas:

  1. Expansion of passenger terminals.
  2. Implementation of automated passenger processing systems (CUPPS).
  3. Modernization of airport security and safety technologies.

According to AOT representatives, the fee increase should not significantly affect tourist demand.

Thailand welcomes millions of foreign visitors every year, and the country continues to actively invest in airport infrastructure to ensure comfortable conditions for the growing passenger traffic.

Comparison with other countries: Thailand’s fee is lower than Singapore’s

AOT President Pavina Jariyatitipong emphasized that even after the rate increase, the airport fee in Thailand will remain lower than the equivalent fee in Singapore. Singapore’s airport fees for international passengers can reach approximately 1,600 baht, while Thailand’s updated rate will be 1,120 baht.

This comparison is intended to demonstrate that Thailand maintains a competitive pricing position among Asian destinations. The country continues to attract tourists through Bangkok and popular beach resorts, particularly Phuket.

Rising overall flight costs: airline fuel surcharges

The increase in airport fees comes amid a general rise in the cost of air travel. Airlines recently increased fuel surcharges due to rising prices for aviation turbine fuel (ATF). Over the past few weeks, prices for many international tickets have risen for this very reason.

Combined with the new airport fee, travelers may see a noticeable increase in the total cost of their trip to Thailand and back. For most passengers, the airport fee will already be included in the ticket price, but the total amount at the time of booking may be higher than before—especially for those planning trips for the second half of 2026.
