Top 10 universities in Europe according to QS 2026

University of Oxford (UK)

Oxford regained its first position in Europe in 2026, scoring a perfect score in five indicators at once - academic reputation, reputation among employers, sustainable development and international environment. It is the oldest English-speaking university in the world, and its diploma still remains one of the most prestigious on the planet.

Oxford's strength is in its breadth of coverage: the humanities and law coexist here with advanced medicine and computer science. The unique tutorial system – when a student works one-on-one or in a micro-group with a research supervisor – provides a level of immersion in the subject that is unattainable at most mass universities.

ETH Zurich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (Switzerland)

If Oxford is a humanitarian greatness, then ETH Zurich is a technological one. Once Albert Einstein studied here, today the university produces engineers and researchers who are gladly hired by Google, Microsoft and CERN. Special specialization is physics, robotics and artificial intelligence.

It is worth noting the cost of tuition: despite its global status, ETH Zurich charges only about 580 Swiss francs per semester (approximately 550 USD) – a price that is lower than at many second-tier universities.

Imperial College London (UK)

Imperial College is rapidly rising in the world rankings thanks to two things: an exceptionally high level of graduate employment and a strong research base. The university focuses on STEM fields – natural sciences, engineering, medicine and business – and maintains close ties with the technology industry in London. Students often complete internships at leading international companies in their first or second year, and the campus actively supports student startups.

University of Cambridge (UK)

Alma mater of Isaac Newton, Alan Turing and Stephen Hawking. Cambridge is not just a university, it is an academic ecosystem with 31 separate colleges, each with its own traditions and culture. The university's strength lies in fundamental research: physics, mathematics, computer science and economics are world-class here.

Admission is difficult not only because of the competition. Cambridge looks not only at grades - the commission assesses the research potential, extracurricular activities and motivation of the candidate. You won’t get here without thorough preparation.

University College London - UCL (UK)

UCL is one of the most international universities in Europe: students from 150+ countries study here. The university is known for its interdisciplinary approach and programs in architecture, psychology, medicine and the humanities. The location in the center of London opens up direct access to internships in international companies, leading museums and libraries.

University of Edinburgh (UK)

One of the leading research centers in Northern Europe, which is particularly strong in artificial intelligence, medicine, international relations and literature. Edinburgh is not just a university, but a student city with ancient architecture, a strong academic community and a rich cultural life. That rare case when the city and the university reinforce each other.

King's College London (UK)

One of the oldest universities in England demonstrates particular strength in medicine, law and international relations. In 2026, King's College took 7th place in Europe with a score of 96.8 and achieved a near-perfect result in academic reputation (99.8). The university is actively investing in research into neuroscience and global politics - students can get involved in real scientific projects from the first year.

Université Paris Sciences et Lettres – PSL (France)

Despite its youth – the university was founded in 2010 as a merger of several prestigious Parisian institutes – PSL is already among the top eight in Europe. Physics, mathematics, social sciences and art are strong here. And Paris itself is an added bonus: students get access to the unrivaled cultural and professional environment of the French capital.

University of Manchester (UK)

Manchester has one of the strongest scientific bases in Europe and actively cooperates with technological and industrial companies in the region. The university is especially famous for its programs in engineering, biomedicine and business. Its advantage is not so much in elitism as in practical orientation: here they train specialists who are in demand in the real labor market.

EPFL – Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland)

The second Swiss representative in the top 10 and a real technological giant. EPFL is known for its research in ecology, biotechnology and engineering, actively supports the startup culture and offers many programs in English. Lausanne is a compact and convenient city with a high quality of life, which is also important for students.

The UK dominates, but Switzerland and France do not give up

Let's look at the big picture: seven of the top ten universities in Europe in 2026 are British. This is a consequence of a systemic advantage in academic reputation and international research networks. At the same time, Switzerland demonstrates strength in technical sciences through ETH Zurich and EPFL, and France, through PSL, in multidisciplinary research.

Outside the top 10, but on the verge, are the Technical University of Munich (Germany, 12th place), Delft University of Technology (Netherlands, 11th place) and Charles University (Czech Republic, leader in Eastern Europe). These universities are growing rapidly thanks to their participation in the Horizon Europe program and their focus on applied research.

How much does it cost and is it possible to study for free?

One of the main questions for any international student is the financial side. And here Europe really surprises. The cost of education varies significantly depending on the country and the student's status:

- Germany and Austria - minimal administrative fees (300-726 euros per semester) for virtually all students, including non-EU citizens. Public universities are virtually free.

- France - public universities charge from 170 to 650 euros per year for any student regardless of citizenship, which is one of the lowest rates in Europe.

- Czech Republic and Poland - programs in Czech/Polish are free; English-language programs - from 1,000 to 7,000 euros per year.

- The Netherlands and Ireland are in the middle price range, 8,000–18,000 euros per year for non-EU students, but with affordable scholarships.

- The UK has the highest rates among top universities, but also the widest opportunities for financial support.

In general, Europe accumulates over 16 billion euros annually in scholarship programs for international students.

France is changing its higher education policy for international students and increasing tuition fees from 2026/2027. Read here how much a bachelor's and master's degree will cost, who will be affected by the new rules, which specialties will become a priority and how this will affect international applicants.

Scholarships worth knowing

If the cost of tuition seems like an obstacle, it is worth taking a closer look at the key scholarship programs:

- Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters is one of the most prestigious EU programs. Full funding: tuition fees, monthly stipend of up to 1,400 euros, insurance and travel. The student studies at at least two different universities in Europe within the framework of one joint program.

- DAAD (Germany) – supports over 100,000 students and researchers annually. Covers tuition, a monthly stipend (about 992 euros), health insurance and travel.

- Swiss Government Grant – 1,920 CHF per month plus full tuition coverage. Available to students from over 180 countries.

- Eiffel Excellence (France) – for master’s and doctoral students, targeted at applicants from developing countries.

- Holland Scholarship (Netherlands) – a smaller amount, but goes well with university grants.

Key rule: apply for scholarships in parallel with the admission documents, not after receiving an invitation. Most deadlines are in the fall or winter, well before the start of the academic year.

When to start preparing and what to consider?

The most common mistake of applicants is to start preparing too late. Leading universities in Europe accept documents from August-October of the previous academic year. The main admission season in Europe is September-October, secondary - January-February.

In addition to the documents themselves, it is worth considering:

- Language certificate: IELTS or TOFUEL for English-language programs, DELF/DALF for French, etc. Preparation takes several months.

- Student visa: after receiving an invitation, the application process takes 6-8 weeks, sometimes longer.

- Financial confirmation: most countries require proof of funds in the account (for example, Germany - about 11,904 euros).

- Housing: Apply for student housing as soon as you receive an offer – places fill up very quickly.

- Work rights: Most countries allow you to work 20 hours a week during your studies and full-time during your holidays.

asked questions

Is it possible to enter a top university in Europe without knowing the language of the country of study?

Yes - and this is one of the main advantages of modern European higher education. Most leading universities offer full-fledged bachelor's and master's programs in English. For example, ETH Zurich and EPFL conduct many master's programs exclusively in English; PSL in Paris is also expanding its English-language offer. Admission usually requires an IELTS certificate (usually from 6.5) or TOEFL. Some universities in the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Central Europe even offer bachelor's programs entirely in English. However, it is worth considering that knowledge of the country's language opens up a wider choice of programs and greatly facilitates everyday student life.

How realistic is it to get a scholarship to study at a top university in Europe?

What to do if problems arise after admission – a conflict with the university, the risk of expulsion or problems with a visa?
