Tour operators observe the behavior of travelers from different countries on a daily basis and form their own impressions of tourists’ habits. Their observations formed the basis of a survey that compared people of different nationalities in terms of politeness, generosity with tips, a penchant for adventure, and other characteristics. Euronews reports on this.

We’ll tell you more about which countries topped the rankings for each criterion and which ones ended up at the bottom of the list in this article.

How was the study on travel habits conducted?

The survey was conducted by safaribookings.com, an online platform for African safaris. Researchers reached out to 192 tour operators, asking them to evaluate travelers based on five key criteria.

Participants answered the following questions:

  • Which nationality is the most polite?
  • Who leaves the biggest tips while traveling?
  • Travelers from which country spend the most money?
  • Who is the most active and adventurous when traveling?
  • Which nationality is the most enthusiastic about food?

The World’s Most Polite Tourists

Tourists from Japan took first place in the politeness ranking—they were chosen by 21.1% of tour operators.

Next are travelers from Norway (10.6%) and Switzerland (10.4%), while the top 5 is rounded out by visitors from Canada and the U.S..

Italian tourists came in last: only 1.3% of respondents named them the world’s most polite nation. At the same time, European visitors also received positive feedback. A representative of Imara Tours Zanzibar noted that many European travelers are interested in the behavior of wild animals and ask detailed questions about nature and its conservation, and their curiosity makes safaris exciting.

Who leaves the most generous tips while traveling?

Americans topped the generosity rankings—they accounted for 29.5% of all mentions by tour operators, significantly exceeding the figures for other nationalities. This result is largely explained by the widespread tipping culture in the U.S.

Germans (13.1%), Canadians (10%), and Swiss (8.6%) also made it into the top ranks of generous tippers.
