Anyone looking for a job in the US usually checks the salary and stops there. The recruitment platform Indeed decided that isn't enough, and at the end of August 2026 it published the first edition of its Best Cities for Work ranking, VisualCapitalist reports. It offers a fresh take on which of America's best cities for work are genuinely well set up for employees, not just for businesses.

Analysts at Indeed Hiring Lab scored 228 metro areas with more than 200,000 residents on 40 indicators grouped into six categories. Boston took first place, Washington came second, and, somewhat unexpectedly, little Burlington, Vermont, finished third. No city won every category at once, and that is exactly what makes the results interesting.

What did the best cities for work ranking measure?

Indeed split the score into six parts:

- Job opportunity and compensation each account for 20% of the total score.

- Job quality and security, career mobility, work-life balance and economic opportunity add 15% each.

- The criteria also cover everyday matters: commute times, the share of income that goes on housing, childcare costs, availability of remote and hybrid work, walkability and internet speed.

The ranking makes one thing clear: to land in the top 25, a single strong score isn't enough, you need balance.

Why did Boston come out ahead?

Interestingly, Boston doesn't top any of the six categories. It is simply consistently strong almost everywhere: second among the top 25 cities for career mobility, fifth for economic opportunity and sixth for compensation. Indeed explains it this way: the Boston–Cambridge ecosystem offers unusually broad access to healthcare, biotechnology, higher education, technology and professional services.

Washington draws on a similar set of strengths, but with a different emphasis. The capital topped the table for career mobility and ranked third for pay. Burlington won in another way: among the top 25, it is first for job opportunity and second for economic opportunity.

Smaller cities where finding a job is easier

Open the column with job openings and the picture changes. After Burlington come Madison, Sioux Falls, Fargo and Manchester. These aren't big metropolises, and that is precisely where the chances of landing a job turn out to be higher. Forbes writes that, against the backdrop of a slow hiring market, smaller cities can offer better odds of actually getting a job, while large coastal hubs pay more but also cost more.

Fargo, for example, ranks second for work-life balance. Sioux Falls is fourth on that measure, even though it finished only 25th overall. It's the kind of thing you rarely notice if you only look at the final score.

Where the pay is highest, and why that isn't everything

The lead in salaries unsurprisingly belongs to the tech hubs. San Jose is first here, followed by Seattle, Washington, San Francisco and Austin. In the overall standings, though, the picture is different: San Jose is fourth, San Francisco fifth, Seattle eighth and Austin ninth. The reason is simple: high pay often offsets expensive housing, long commutes and fierce competition, and the ranking factors that in.

Each category also has its own "champions". A few leaders deserve a separate mention:

- Boulder – the best work-life balance;

- Charlottesville – the highest job quality and security;

- Rochester (Minnesota) – the most economic opportunity;

- Washington – the best career mobility.

Ann Arbor deserves special attention. This university and tech town in southeastern Michigan doesn't top any list, but it posts consistently strong results: second for job quality, third for career mobility and fifth for work-life balance.

How to read this ranking, and where it falls short

This list shouldn't be treated as the last word. It is the first edition, and it reflects only Indeed's methodology. Other studies give different results: in WalletHub's own 2026 ranking, which assessed 182 cities, Scottsdale, Arizona, for instance, appears among the top three cities for finding a job. So the outcome depends heavily on what you consider important.

There is one more caveat for those considering a job in the US from abroad. The ranking is built from the point of view of someone who already lives and works in the country, and it does not account for immigration status. A foreign national first needs the appropriate work visa, usually through an employer. The rules are shifting: in 2026 a separate fee for the H-1B visa was challenged in court, and at the end of September the administration extended the restrictions for another year. So before taking any steps, check official sources and consult a specialist.

How to choose a city for your career, not just for the salary

The most useful approach is to decide first what matters to you and only then look at the position in the table. Some people want a fast start and more openings, and Burlington, Fargo or Madison suit them better. Others need a career elevator, and Washington, Boston or Denver make more sense. And if you value your time after work, take a closer look at Boulder and Fargo. The best result comes from comparing several cities on what really matters in your situation.

Finding the city of your dreams is only half the job. The other half is getting there to work legally, and rankings can't help with that. You need a work visa or a work permit, and every missing document can delay the decision or end in a refusal.

Visit World's Work Guide includes step-by-step instructions for applying for a short-term or long-term work visa, from the visa application form to registration with local authorities. It also explains how to obtain a work permit and provides complete document lists for both procedures. The guide also covers the visa fee, processing times, rules for filling in the application form and practical tips for staying in the country.
