When Europe turns damp and grey, Asia is just entering its most comfortable travel season. The best places to visit in Asia in autumn were picked for Lonely Planet by Marco Ferrarese, a writer who has lived and worked in the region for almost twenty years. His list has twelve destinations, from India's Kerala to Japan's Hokkaido. We checked the selection against data as of October 2026 and added festival dates, entry conditions and rule changes. Read about where to go in Asia in autumn 2026 in the new Visit World article.

Why is autumn the best time to travel to Asia?

The reason is simple. At the end of summer the heat eases in the deserts and highlands, the monsoons pull back from the Himalayas, and at lower altitudes the mountains and valleys turn red and gold. Add to that reefs with better visibility, ancient temples without the summer crowds, and festivals rooted in traditions that are centuries old.

Best places to visit in Asia in autumn: where to start

The list turned out varied: mountain trails, cycling routes, volcanic islands and cities with big celebrations. Here are all twelve destinations at a glance:

- Kerala, India: green backwaters after the monsoon

- Nepal: trekking in clear, dry weather

- Western Mongolia: nomadic traditions and eagle hunting

- Hunza Valley, Pakistan: red and golden valleys

- Penang, Malaysia: the Hungry Ghost Festival

- Four Rivers Trail, South Korea: cycling along the great rivers

- Hokkaido, Japan: the country’s earliest autumn colours

- Banda Islands, Indonesia: diving and colonial history

- Hexi Corridor, China: the Silk Road and the Mogao Caves

- Ha Giang Loop, Vietnam: by motorbike across the karst plateau

- Ladakh, India: Tibetan monasteries before the cold sets in

- Thailand: Loy Krathong and quiet islands

One caveat up front: some of this year's autumn events have already passed. The Hungry Ghost Festival in Malaysia ended on 10 September, and Mongolia's main eagle hunters' festival took place in early October. Put them in next year's plans. Still ahead are Loy Krathong in November, the last weeks of autumn colour, trekking in Nepal and the driest season on the Banda Islands.

Trekking in Nepal, Hunza and Ladakh: mountains after the monsoon

After the monsoon, Nepal gets clear skies and dry weather, which is why October and November are considered the hiking season. The routes to the Annapurna and Everest base camps are the most popular and the most crowded. If you want solitude, try Manaslu: the circuit around the world's eighth-highest peak crosses the Larkya La pass at 5,160 m. A special permit and a licensed guide are required. Permit rules in Nepal have changed more than once, so it is best to confirm the current list with a local agency.

In northern Pakistan, autumn paints the high-altitude valleys red and gold. The Hunza Valley is the easiest for travellers, with its well-paved Karakoram Highway. Along the way you will see Nanga Parbat (8,126 m), the Passu Cones and the Khunjerab Pass (4,693 m), the highest paved border crossing in the world. Flights from Islamabad to Gilgit are often cancelled, so leave spare days in your schedule. Governments of several countries keep a "reconsider travel" advisory for Pakistan, and standard travel insurance does not always cover it. Visas are issued through the official online portal, since the free Visa Prior to Arrival scheme was reportedly suspended from 1 January 2026.

Ladakh is best visited before winter arrives. In October the summer crowds are gone, and from Leh you can head to the monasteries of Lamayuru, Hemis, Thiksey and Alchi, to the Nubra Valley or to Pangong Tso lake (around 4,350 m). In Hemis National Park it is the right time to look for snow leopards. Allow at least two days for acclimatisation in Leh. Foreigners need a Protected Area Permit for Nubra and Pangong, and the permit system is currently under review, so check the conditions before you travel.

Asian autumn festivals: Mongolia, Malaysia and Thailand

In October, western Mongolia is already cold, but prices are lower and there are fewer tourists. That is when the Golden Eagle Festival takes place near Ulgii, where hunters show the ancient tradition of hunting with golden eagles. In 2026 the main festival, according to local operators, fell on 3–4 October. Next time, aim for the first weekend of October. The smaller Sagsai festival is held in mid-September. Flights and transfers are easier to arrange through a local tour operator.

In Malaysia, the most remarkable things happen in the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar. According to local Chinese belief, the gates of hell open then, and Tai Su Yeh, the "King of Hades", returns to earth with souls awaiting reincarnation. They are appeased with prayers, food, Chinese opera and puppet theatre, and the finale is bonfires with giant paper effigies. It is best seen in Penang. In 2026 the celebrations ran from 13 August to 10 September, and on 29 August an 8.9 m effigy was burned in Bukit Mertajam. On 3 September Penang became the first state in the country to recognise the festival as intangible cultural heritage. The date shifts every year, so ask locals: the big bonfire is rarely advertised online.

Thailand goes through its rainy season in autumn, but the country is less crowded and cheaper. In November, on the night of the full moon, comes Loy Krathong (24–25 November in 2026). People float lotus-shaped baskets of banana leaves, flowers and candles on the water to honour the water goddess and apologise for pollution. In Chiang Mai the same days coincide with Yi Peng, when lanterns are released into the sky. The islands of the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, are the least crowded at this time, but expect rough seas and short downpours.

Roads, autumn colours and history: from Korea to the Banda Islands

From September to the end of October, South Korea shows what an easy autumn trip in Asia can look like. The Four Rivers Trail stretches 633 km from Incheon to Busan along flat paths beside the great rivers, with shops, campsites and free toilets. From Busan you can take a ferry to Fukuoka in Japan and keep going. In late September and early October, the folk village of Hahoe in Andong hosts a mask dance festival.

Hokkaido is the first place in Japan to put on its autumn colours. In Daisetsuzan National Park the red leaves appear in mid-September, and by mid-October the colours move down to the lower slopes. The best plan is to climb Asahidake (2,291 m) or take the cable car up Kurodake, then end the day in the hot spring pool at Sounkyo Onsen.

The Ha Giang Loop in Vietnam is ridden by motorbike from September to November. The rice terraces turn gold, and in November the buckwheat blooms and the Buckwheat Flower Festival takes place. Most travellers need an e-visa of up to 90 days to enter (from 25 US dollars), and the loop itself requires a motorbike licence and, depending on the country of issue, an International Driving Permit. Documents are checked here more often than elsewhere.

Kerala is still green in October and November after the monsoon. Start with a cycling tour of Kochi, then head to the Alleppey backwaters (especially lovely from a kayak), the Malabar coast, where Vasco da Gama landed in 1498, and Wayanad with the Edakkal caves, covered in Neolithic petroglyphs. To rent a motorbike you need a licence in English or an International Driving Permit.

In October the days in western China are warm rather than hot, so it is the right time to take a train through the Hexi Corridor from Lanzhou to Dunhuang. It was once the start of the Silk Road. Here you will find the Giant Buddha in Zhangye, Jiayuguan Fort at the edge of the Great Wall and the Mogao Caves with a thousand years of Buddhist murals. The high-speed train covers 1,095 km in about 7 hours, but it is better to set aside a week. Book train tickets online in advance.

The Banda Islands, a volcanic archipelago in Indonesia, have an extraordinary history. In 1667 the Dutch handed Manhattan to the English in exchange for the tiny island of Run, where nutmeg grew, valued more than gold. On Banda Neira stand Fort Belgica and Fort Nassau, the Gunung Api volcano rises above them, and divers head for Pulau Ay. From September to December it is the driest season, with the best visibility. In October–December, Dharma Indah fast ferries run here from Ambon (about 4 hours), along with SAM Air flights.

Entry rules in 2026: what has changed for travellers

Asia visa-free travel in 2026 remains available to many, but conditions change quickly and last year's advice may no longer work. Here is the essentials as of October:

- Thailand. From 15 September 2026 the visa-free stay for citizens of most countries was cut to 30 days (it used to be 60). Before arrival you must fill in the TDAC digital card 72 hours ahead, and at the border you may be asked to show 20,000 baht in cash per person. The planned 300-baht fee was not being collected as of mid-2026.

- China. Until 31 December 2026, citizens of about 48 countries can stay in the country for up to 30 days without a visa.

- Mongolia. Citizens of 34 countries travel visa-free for 30 days until 1 January 2027. For US citizens a separate agreement allows up to 90 days.

- South Korea. A temporary exemption from the K-ETA electronic authorisation for citizens of a number of countries is valid until 31 December 2026.

- Japan. From 1 July 2026 the departure tax rose from 1,000 to 3,000 yen, and the JESTA pre-authorisation system for visa-free travellers is expected from 2028.

- Indonesia. A visa on arrival (or e-VOA) costs 500,000 rupiah and gives 30 days. The All Indonesia digital card is also mandatory, and in Bali a tourist levy of 150,000 rupiah is payable on top.

These are general conditions, and they may differ for your passport. Check with embassies or official portals before departure.

How to prepare for an autumn trip to Asia?

Autumn Asia is full of contrasts: warm and humid in Thailand, freezing at night in Mongolia and Ladakh. So pack in layers and choose insurance to match your route. For mountains, trekking, motorbike routes and remote islands, check that the policy covers altitude, motorised transport and evacuation. It is best to prepare documents, bookings and permits in advance, because on popular routes autumn tours sell out quickly.

An autumn route through Asia is rarely limited to one country, and each has its own entry rules: in Thailand visa-free stays now last 30 days, Vietnam requires an e-visa, Indonesia issues a visa on arrival. The Visit World "Travel Guide" will help you prepare without intermediaries. It describes step by step how to get a visa from the application form to the interview, gives the visa fee and processing time, photo requirements, the full list of documents and tips for your trip. Enter your citizenship and destination country and choose the guide made for you.

Reminder! A cheap flight does not guarantee a budget holiday: meals and daily purchases can add substantially to costs. We compared prices across destinations, from the African coast to the Canary Islands. Find out more about the most affordable places for a winter trip, local prices and what to expect.

asked questions

Does standard travel insurance cover high-altitude trekking?

Not always. Many policies have altitude limits and exclude certain types of motorized transport, so check your policy for clauses covering high-altitude trekking and evacuation. This is especially important for destinations such as Nepal, Ladakh, and Hunza.

How much time is needed to acclimatize before high-altitude routes?

What should you pack if your route combines hot and cold weather?
