How does Airbnb’s new rain insurance work?
The new Weather Protection insurance product allows travelers to receive compensation for rainy weather during their stay at a property booked through Airbnb. The service was launched in partnership with the insurance company Chubb European Group SE.
A key feature of the insurance is that eligibility for a payout is determined automatically. Travelers don’t need to prove that the rain ruined their vacation, canceled a tour, or caused additional expenses.
Weather Protection operates on the principle of parametric insurance:
- A traveler purchases the insurance when booking accommodations or adds it to the booking later.
- The policy specifies the weather conditions under which compensation is provided and the amount of the payout.
- During the stay, the system tracks the amount of precipitation at the location of the rented accommodation.
- If rainfall reaches the established threshold, the traveler receives a notification regarding their right to compensation.
- Chubb makes the payment to a bank account after the necessary payment details are provided.
To verify weather conditions, the insurer uses independent meteorological sources, including data from NOAA, ECMWF, NASA, and national weather radars.
Important! The insurance coverage applies to the address of the booked accommodation. If a traveler goes on an excursion to another city, rain at the excursion destination will not qualify for compensation.

How much does Airbnb pay for rain, and under what conditions?
Under the Weather Protection program, travelers can receive between 50 and 1,000 euros for a single rainy day. The specific amount is determined when the insurance is purchased and is specified in the insurance certificate. Compensation is paid only for days when precipitation meets the established criteria.
To receive a payment, the following conditions must be met simultaneously:
- Precipitation intensity: at least 1.5 mm of rain per hour
- Time: rain must fall between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. local time
- Duration: the minimum number of rainy hours required is specified in the individual insurance policy
- Location: precipitation must be recorded directly in the area of the booked accommodation
- Booking: the insurance must be valid, and the reservation must not have been canceled
For example, if it rained for only one hour during the day, but the insurance policy stipulates a longer minimum duration, no compensation will be paid. At the same time, a traveler may receive compensation even if the bad weather did not interfere with their plans.
Important! 1,000 euros is the maximum possible payout per day, not a guaranteed compensation for every traveler. The exact amount and required duration of precipitation depend on the terms of the purchased policy.

In which countries is Airbnb rain insurance available?
Currently, Weather Protection is available to residents of 10 European countries. Adult Airbnb users residing in one of the following countries can purchase this insurance:
- Austria
- Denmark
- France
- Germany
- Ireland
- Italy
- Poland
- Spain
- Sweden
Insurance is available not only for domestic travel. For example, a resident of Poland can purchase Weather Protection for a vacation in Italy or France. However, the service does not cover trips to the United States or certain territories subject to restrictions.
To purchase a policy, a traveler must meet three basic requirements: be at least 18 years old, reside in one of the listed countries, and have a confirmed Airbnb reservation. The insurance is issued in the name of the person who made the reservation, not all guests staying at the property.
Ukraine is not yet included in the list of countries whose residents can purchase Weather Protection. However, Ukrainians living in Poland, Germany, or another country on the list may potentially use the service provided they meet the insurer’s requirements.

How do you purchase Airbnb insurance and receive compensation?
You can purchase rain insurance on Airbnb either when booking a listing or after your booking has been confirmed. In the latter case, there must be at least 7 days remaining before check-in.
To purchase Weather Protection, you need to:
1. Select a listing on Airbnb and proceed to checkout
2. Find the Weather Protection option among the available add-ons
3. Review the insurance cost, compensation amount, and weather conditions required for a payout
4. Pay for the insurance policy along with your booking or add it later using the “Add to your trip” button in your booking confirmation
5. Receive an insurance certificate via email with coverage details
How do I get a payout for rain?
If the weather conditions meet the policy criteria, Airbnb will send a notification via email or through the platform. The traveler will receive a secure link to the Chubb payment portal, where they’ll need to enter their bank details. Sometimes the insurer may additionally request proof of identity.
After the initial setup, subsequent payments will be processed automatically. Funds will be deposited into the specified bank account in local currency. The time it takes for the funds to be credited depends on Chubb’s payment processing procedures.
You do not need to file an insurance claim. You can check the status of your compensation in your Airbnb account under the policy details section. If you haven’t received a payment even though the conditions were met, you should contact Chubb directly.

What do you need to know before purchasing Airbnb insurance?
Weather Protection insurance has a number of limitations that you should review before paying. The policy does not cover all weather-related risks, and its cost and compensation amount depend on the specific reservation.
Key terms and limitations:
- Insurance cost. There is no flat rate. Travelers see the policy price when making a reservation, and the exact compensation amount is listed in the insurance certificate.
- Length of stay. Insurance is not available for bookings of 30 days or more. If the trip is subsequently extended, coverage will be limited to the first 29 days.
- Other weather phenomena. Snow, hail, black ice, and strong winds do not qualify for payouts. The program covers only rain that meets the policy’s conditions.
- Natural disasters. No compensation is provided for certain weather events related to natural disasters that were known prior to purchasing the insurance.
- Changes to booking dates. Before the trip begins, the insurance is automatically updated to reflect the new travel conditions. Once you check in, it is no longer possible to change the policy.
It’s also important to note the refund policy for Weather Protection. A traveler can cancel the insurance on their own at least 10 days before check-in and receive a full refund. If the accommodation reservation itself is canceled before the trip begins, the insurance policy is automatically canceled, and the premium paid is refunded.
If the insurance is canceled less than 10 days before check-in, the premium is generally non-refundable. If a traveler ends their stay early, the insurance coverage also ends. Before paying, it is recommended to check the cost of the policy, the minimum duration of precipitation required for a payout, and the specified compensation amount.
No matter how well thought-out your itinerary is, there is always room for force majeure when traveling.
