Grenada's health policy aims to ensure that every citizen has access to health services. Both public and private medical institutions are available in the country. The Ministry of Health (MOH) of Grenada is responsible for policy formation, regulation and financial management of the health sector.
Health sector
The country is divided into seven different health districts, each with a district health professional, several categories of nurses, dentists, pharmacists, environmental specialists, and other support services.
Funding for the public health sector comes through taxation, through international agencies for certain programs. Users are also charged in hospitals (excluding the elderly, children, and other vulnerable groups) to cover private wards and certain diagnostic services. In addition to these fees, medical services are mostly free.
Private health sector
Although health care in Grenada is mainly provided through public institutions, there is a growing demand for private health services in Grenada. Most of these facilities are located in the capital – including five emergency hospitals, thirteen nursing homes, two maternity wards and several clinics for private doctors.
Although there is no national health insurance, all Grenadines are required to participate in the Social Security Program, a national insurance scheme that provides coverage for injuries at work.
Recommendations for travelers
Please note that all travelers aged one year and older must have a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Bottled water is recommended, which is available on the island. Local seafood, fruits and vegetables are considered safe to eat. In the event of a serious emergency or long-term treatment, expats will have to be evacuated for medical care to a country with state-of-the-art technology. It will probably be the United States. Given the exorbitant costs of U.S. health care and medical evacuation, expats are encouraged to get a private health insurance plan.
A child who was born in the territory of Grenada, regardless of the nationality of his parents, can obtain Grenada citizenship if the child cannot obtain another citizenship.
