    Is dual citizenship allowed in Guinea-Bissau?

    Dual citizenship is not recognized in Guinea-Bissau. Exception: a child who was born abroad who receives citizenship of the country of birth can have dual citizenship until the age of 18. Then the person must renounce foreign citizenship, otherwise the citizenship of Guinea-Bissau will be revoked.

    1. By birth

    As a rule, in Guinea-Bissau, the combination “jus krvavinis” and “jus soli” is used to determine nationality at birth. Those that meet the requirements include:

• People who were born in Guinea-Bissau and have a father or mother who are citizens of Guinea-Bissau;
• Found children or orphans, without visible evidence of their parents ' nationality or identity;
• People who were born in Guinea-Bissau who would otherwise be stateless.

    2. By Origin

• People who were born abroad to a citizen of Guinea-Bissau must register their birth with the authorities and go through the administrative process to obtain citizenship.

    3. By marriage

    Wife/husband of a citizen / citizen of Guinea-Bissau after three years of marriage and one year of residence in the country.

    Basic marriage requirements in Guinea-Bissau

    To marry a citizen of Guinea-Bissau, you must demonstrate to the Government of Guinea-Bissau that you have the right to do so, that is, to provide:

• Confirmation of the country of birth
• Confirmation of unmarried status
• Confirmation of compliance with age requirements.

    4. By naturalization

    Guinea-Bissaua citizenship can be obtained by naturalization if the following conditions are met:

• the person has legally resided in the country for at least five years, 
• renounced her former citizenship, 
• has a job or livelihood, 
• has no criminal record.
