The Kiribati health care system consists of four state-funded hospitals and about 20 health facilities. The main state hospital of Tungaru, located in the central city of Tarawa, has a tuberculosis department, a small laboratory, an X-ray machine, and an operating room. In addition to this, there are 70 pharmaceutical dispensaries located throughout the island, which are equipped to treat minor injuries and typical diseases.
In addition to state medical institutions, most of the local residents choose alternative medicine. Foreigners who start visiting Kiribati or emigrating are advised to purchase health insurance that covers the cost of medical evacuation in the event of an emergency.
Before traveling, you must be vaccinated against the following diseases: yellow fever, hepatitis A, measles, hepatitis B, COVID-19, and influenza.
A child born in Kiribati can obtain Kiribati citizenship provided that the father (if the child was born legally) or the mother (if the child was born out of wedlock) do not have diplomatic immunity or are not members of the occupation army. Also, a child can obtain citizenship at birth if they do not have Kiribati origin, but were born in Kiribati and do not have the right to be citizens of any other country.
