There are a total of 14 higher education institutions in Nicaragua. The most popular study courses at these universities are international relations, business and medicine.
University studies usually follow the following sequence. The first level of study culminates in the award of a Licenciatura (bachelor's degree), which is usually obtained after four or five years of study, depending on the subject, and indicates a basic professional qualification. The shortest course of study is a two-year program in accounting, and the longest is a six-year program in medicine.
Education in all universities is conducted in Spanish, with the exception of a few faculties.
