The main documents that applicants must include in their application for a work visa:
- Valid passport
- Certificate of employment
- Doctor's certificate
- Police character statement from the country of origin
- Work permit approval letter
The employer must provide a letter of employment for the applicant. A doctor's certificate must confirm that the applicant is healthy. You also need to have a copy of your passport photo to attach to the application.
In addition, many work visas require a work permit.
A work permit is a separate document from a work visa. If a worker works with a visa but without a work permit, the government will consider their work illegal. Work permits are issued by the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DILR). Contact DLIR for more information.
Employees must apply before entering the country.
Basic requirements:
- A signed employment contract
- Resume
- A copy of the job description
- A copy of the certificate of registration of the hiring company
Like the visa process, the work permit process requires the help of the employer.
Once the applicant has received the work permit, they can submit the appropriate work visa application with attachments to the Immigration and Citizenship Authority (ICA). They should hand over all materials to the nearest consulate. Once approved, the visa holder can enter the country and start working as a legal employee.
Additional Information
When an employee's work visa expires, he/she has the right to apply for an extension of work in the country. He may be denied this extension depending on the nature of the work.
If a work visa holder intends to stay in Papua New Guinea for an extended period, he/she can apply for permanent residence.
