European countries return restrictions on the transportation of liquids in hand luggage: the new rules will come into effect on September 1, 2024
The European Union obliged all airports from September 1, 2024 to return restrictions on the transportation of liquids in hand luggage. According to the new rules, the permissible volume will be 100 ml of liquid, including aerosol and gel containers. Find out how air carriers and passengers have responded to this requirement
The authorities of the European Union have decided to bring back restrictions on the transportation of liquids in hand luggage. In particular, from September 1, 2024, passengers will be allowed to take no more than 100 ml of liquid on board the plane. Such news caused a rather ambiguous reaction, especially among representatives of airports, and there are certain reasons for this.
How did airport representatives react?
The Airports Council International (ACI) of Europe commented on this news in its press release, which noted that the new measure will affect both passengers and airports.
Taking this into account, the council called on the European Commission and EU member states to develop a road map with defined goals for this measure.
The introduction of a liquid restriction will have a negative impact on airport investment
ACI notes that the new measure will have a negative impact on airport investments, because when the European Commission agreed to lift restrictions on liquids, one of the conditions for airports was to install the growing C3 scanners that help check passengers' belongings. Thanks to these devices, passengers were able to carry liquid in hand luggage without restrictions, as well as store it next to electronic devices such as laptops.
Many airports in Europe have purchased the necessary equipment, having listened to the EU requirements, but now it becomes unnecessary, because even the presence of a C3 scanner will not remove the restrictions on the transportation of liquids from the airport.
Considering that C3 scanners can cost up to eight times more to purchase than conventional machines. Their maintenance costs are also four times higher. Airports that are the first to implement this new technology are experiencing significant operational and financial losses.
Importantly! C3 scanners are already installed in certain airports in Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Sweden and Malta.
What will change for passengers?
The introduction of a new requirement for the amount of liquid in hand luggage will lead to a significant operational burden and affect the passenger experience of the journey.
The Airports Council International (ACI) is currently awaiting a response from the European Commission and hopes that the approved restrictions will be temporary.
We will remind you! Passengers who have spent additional money to buy a seat in business class expect to spend the flight in comfort. However, there is still a risk of being in an ordinary seat in economy class. Read more about the possible reasons for a downgrade on an airplane in this article.
