By Origin: a child who was born abroad, at least one of whose parents is a citizen of Tuvalu.
By registration: citizenship by registration includes those who have a family or historical relationship with Tuvalu. Persons who acquire citizenship by registration include:

- Foreign Husband / wife of Tuvalu residents;
- People who didn’t automatically obtain citizenship at the time of Tuvalu's independence.
Regular naturalization in Tuvalu is obtained by submitting an application to the citizenship commission responsible for immigration. Candidates must confirm that they have good behavior; are financially self-sufficient; and intend to reside in the territory. Individuals must be able to demonstrate that they have lived in the country for at least seven years. Former citizens who have previously lost their citizenship can apply for naturalization after five years of residence. Another category for special naturalization includes those who have served the government in a paid position abroad for at least seven years. Applicants who have received permission to naturalize must take an oath of Allegiance.
Dual citizenship is recognized.
