Unlike many European countries, Poland does not use a general vignette for passenger cars. Drivers pay only for travel on individual toll sections, and the amount depends on the highway, the vehicle category, and the distance traveled.

In 2026, toll rates on the A2 and A4 increased, so a one-way trip through a toll section can cost between 29.90 and 138 zlotys. To avoid unnecessary expenses or delays at the toll gate, it’s a good idea to check your route, the toll calculation system, and available payment methods in advance.

Are you planning a trip to Europe by car?

In many countries, highways are tolled and require an electronic road vignette. This is a digital permit that confirms payment for the use of toll roads and is checked automatically by the license plate number - without stickers and paper receipts. Making a vignette online before you travel will help you avoid fines, travel delays, and unpleasant situations during inspections.

Which roads in Poland are toll roads for passenger cars?

Tolls for vehicles weighing up to 3.5 metric tons and motorcycles apply only on specific concession sections of three highways:

- A1 Rusocin – Nowa Wieś between Gdańsk and Toruń

- A2 Świecko – Konin in the western part of the country

- A4 Katowice–Kraków in southern Poland

The rest of the highways and S-category expressways are mostly free for passenger cars. In particular, there are no tolls on the state-owned sections of the A2 Konin–Stryków, A2 Stryków–Warsaw, and A4 Wrocław–Gliwice. The Poznań bypass on the A2 is also toll-free.

Toll sections are marked with road signs, and toll gates and information boards are installed before the toll plazas. You do not need to purchase a separate vignette to drive on Polish roads.

A1 Gdańsk–Toruń Motorway: Toll Rates

On the A1, the 152-kilometer section between the Rusocin and Nowa Wieś interchanges is tolled. It runs between the Gdańsk area and Toruń and is part of the main route from northern to central Poland.

In 2026, the toll for traveling the entire section in a passenger car or on a motorcycle is 29.90 zloty one way. Drivers pay less for shorter routes: the amount is determined based on the entry and exit points. The exact cost can be calculated using the A1 operator’s calculator.

This section operates on a closed-loop toll system. Upon entry, the driver receives a ticket, which they then hand to the toll collector or insert into an automated terminal upon exit. For automatic payment without manual transaction, drivers can use the AmberGO system, which recognizes the vehicle’s license plate and deducts the required amount.

A2 Svecko–Konin Expressway: Poland’s Most Expensive Toll Road

The A2 toll concession section stretches 255 km from the German border to Konin. It is divided into two segments with different pricing principles:

- Świecko – Nowy Tomyśl: a closed system with payment based on the actual distance traveled

- Nowy Tomyśl – Konin: an open system with toll plazas in Wrzesnia, Slupca, and Słogocin

Starting March 11, 2026, travel on each of the three approximately 50-kilometer segments between Nowy Tomyśl and Konin will cost 40 zlotys for a passenger car and 20 zlotys for a motorcycle. Therefore, this 150-kilometer stretch will cost 120 or 60 zlotys, respectively.

The entire one-way trip from Świecko to Konin will cost approximately 138 zlotys for a passenger car and 78 zlotys for a motorcycle. At the same time, the 26-kilometer Poznań bypass, which is part of this route, remains free of charge. Current rates and the cost of individual sections are available on the Autostrada Wielkopolska operator’s website.

A4 Katowice–Kraków Highway: New Toll Rates Starting in April

The toll section of the A4 between Katowice and Kraków is approximately 61 km long. There are two toll plazas along this section: in Mysłowice and Bialice. Payment is made separately at each one.

Starting April 1, 2026, the following toll rates will apply:

- Passenger car – 18 zlotys at each toll plaza, or 36 zlotys for the entire route

- Motorcycle – 9 zlotys at each toll plaza, or 18 zlotys for the entire route

- Two-axle vehicle with a trailer – 32 zlotys at each toll plaza, or 64 zlotys for the entire section

The mobile app and devices of the state e-TOLL system do not work on this section. Payment can be made directly at the toll plaza or via automatic license plate recognition services. A complete list of toll rates is available on the A4 operator’s website.

The concession for managing this section expires in March 2027. Once it comes under state management, Polish authorities plan to eliminate tolls for passenger cars.

In our previous article, we discussed the most common reasons tourists are fined on European roads in 2026.

How do you pay for toll roads in Poland?

There is no single payment method for all toll highways, as each concession section is managed by a separate operator. Before your trip, it’s important to check which service is available on your planned route.

Main payment options:

- A1 Rusocin – Nowa Wieś: cash, bank card, or the AmberGO automated system

- A2 Świecko – Konin: cash, bank card, or fuel card at toll booths

- A4 Katowice – Kraków: cash, card, A4Go, Telepass, or video tolling via Autopay, SkyCash, IKO, and Yanosik

A closed-loop system is in operation on the A1 and the western section of the A2. Drivers receive a ticket upon entry and pay for the distance traveled upon exit. The ticket must be retained until the end of the journey: if lost, the operator may charge the maximum rate applicable to the vehicle’s category.

An open system is used on the A4 and the Novy Tomishl–Konin section of the A2. Drivers pay a fixed amount at each toll station regardless of their entry point. If you plan to pay in cash, it’s most convenient to have Polish zlotys: acceptance of foreign currency and change policies vary by operator.

We previously reported that Europe is introducing mandatory driver surveillance cameras.

Who will need the e‑TOLL system in 2026?

e‑TOLL is used to pay tolls on designated state roads for vehicles with a maximum authorized mass exceeding 3.5 metric tons and for buses. Regular passenger cars without a trailer do not need to register in the system, purchase an electronic ticket, or install the e‑TOLL PL app.

For passenger cars with trailers, a transitional rule applies in 2026:

- Until September 20, e‑TOLL is required if the maximum authorized weight of the entire vehicle combination exceeds 3.5 metric tons

- Starting September 21, 2026, vehicles with a maximum authorized mass of up to 3.5 metric tons will be exempt from e‑TOLL even when towing a trailer

This change applies to the state electronic toll collection system but does not eliminate tolls on the concession sections of the A1, A2, and A4 highways. On these sections, a vehicle with a trailer may fall into a higher toll category. Detailed explanations of the new rules are available on the official e‑TOLL website.
