How was the ranking of Europe’s most peaceful destinations compiled?

Analysts at Inghams reviewed nearly 100 travel destinations across various European countries. The evaluation was based on six criteria: the number of hiking trails per square kilometer, air quality, the variety of birdsong, conditions for stargazing, population density, and the percentage of forest cover. The maximum score was 100 points.

West Ross: Scotland’s Top-Ranked Destination

This region in the northwestern mountainous part of Scotland received the highest score among all locations. The population density here is only 1.6 people per square kilometer, and its light pollution level on the Bortle scale is one of the lowest in Europe.

The landscape consists of mountain peaks, deep sea inlets, and coastline. In the waters of Loch Mare, you can spot otters and black-throated loons. The region also preserves traditional Gaelic culture and the practice of “crofting”—a form of small-scale farming.

The French Pyrenees: A Mountain Range with a Variety of Birdsong

The Pyrenees stretch for more than 430 kilometers along the border between France and Spain. The French section ranked second in the list thanks to its combination of an extensive network of trails and a rich natural soundscape. The area is home to over 319 species of birds.

Among the popular routes is an 8.7-kilometer trail along the Andret ridges, which starts at the Col d’Obisc pass and offers views of green hills.

Abisko: A Swedish Village Above the Arctic Circle

This village in northern Sweden took third place in the overall ranking and first place in the category of best destinations for hiking. The area features an extensive network of trails of varying difficulty levels, allowing travelers to explore the surroundings without detailed advance planning.

From September through April, the Northern Lights can be seen over Abisko—the region is among the world’s best locations for observing this natural phenomenon.

Why does nature promote recovery during a vacation?

Spending time in natural landscapes activates the brain’s “default mode network”—a state of calm accompanied by the consolidation of memories, the processing of emotions, and the development of self-awareness.

British psychotherapist Eloise Skinner explained that a quiet natural environment helps the body transition from a “fight-or-flight” state to a “rest-and-digest” state. This reduces the stress response and alleviates cognitive fatigue, while also allowing you to focus on your inner state.
