November in Europe marks the transition from fall to winter: the days are getting shorter, and the weather is less predictable. At the same time, there are fewer tourists in the cities, cultural events are taking place, and by the end of the month, you can already feel Christmas approaching. Euronews recently wrote about this.

We’ll tell you more below about which destinations to choose, which festivals to catch, and which new hotels to stay at in November 2026.

Planning a trip through Europe in November and want to catch the season’s top events?

The travel guide from the Visit World portal will help you plan an itinerary featuring Christmas markets, festivals, or a sunny getaway.

Why is November a great time to travel through Europe?

November is ideal for traveling through Europe thanks to fewer tourists and a packed cultural calendar. This month, you can leisurely visit museums, palaces, and cafés without the summer crowds, attend sports and scientific events, and catch the opening of Christmas markets. For those seeking warmth, the Canary Islands offer the gentle late-autumn sun.

It’s also worth considering the season’s unique characteristics: daylight hours are shorter in November, and the weather across most of Europe is less predictable than in the summer. Therefore, when planning your itinerary, it’s best to leave time in your schedule for museums and other indoor activities.

Vienna Christmas Markets 2026: Opening Dates

The first Christmas markets in Vienna will open as early as the beginning of November 2026. On November 6, markets will open near Schönbrunn Palace and on Stephansplatz, and on November 13, the capital’s most famous market will open on Rathausplatz. This makes the Austrian capital ideal for those who want to experience the festive atmosphere even before December.

In addition to the markets, November in Vienna is a great time to explore museums, palaces, and luxurious coffeehouses without the summer crowds. Must-see attractions include the Belvedere and Hofburg palaces, as well as the Kunsthistorisches Museum, featuring works by European Old Masters and the Habsburgs’ art treasures.

Fuerteventura in November: Beaches, Dunes, and a New Resort

The Canary Islands remain one of the most reliable options in Europe for a sunny getaway in November, and Fuerteventura is particularly appealing among them. The island’s beaches, volcanic landscapes, and vast dunes can be explored without the summer heat. Fuerteventura is also one of the most affordable islands in the archipelago, and the sun sets later here than in most parts of mainland Europe.
On November 1, the Elba Corralejo Resort & Spa opens on the island. The resort features 478 rooms, 20 pools, restaurants, and a wide range of wellness and family-friendly amenities.

New Hotels in Europe: November 2026 Openings

In November 2026, new hotels will open in Madrid and Maastricht. In the Spanish capital, Casa Verbena Madrid—the first hotel in the Hilton Outset Collection in Europe—will begin operations. In the Netherlands, on the banks of the Meuse River, the four-star-plus Van der Valk Exclusief Hotel Maastricht-Maas will open. Both hotels are conveniently located for exploring the city center on foot.

  • Casa Verbena Madrid: 45 boutique-style rooms inspired by Spanish architecture and culture; interiors designed by Spanish designer Lorenzo Castillo; the hotel is situated on the pedestrian shopping street Calle de Preciados, just a few minutes’ walk from Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, and the Royal Palace.
  • Van der Valk Exclusief Hotel Maastricht-Maas: 113 rooms, modern design with South American motifs, a restaurant, a bar, meeting spaces, and a panoramic wellness area on the fifth floor; located near Maastricht’s historic center.

The 2026 Athens Marathon and Science Week in Berlin

Athens is ideal for an active getaway in November, while Berlin is perfect for a cultural one. The 43rd Athens Marathon: The Authentic will take place on November 7–8 along the historic route from Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium. Spectators can witness one of the world’s most famous marathon routes, and the event itself takes place after the summer heat in Athens has subsided.

Berlin Science Week will run from November 1 to 10. The theme for 2026 is “In Touch”: exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and performances throughout the city will showcase how science influences everyday life. The weekend of November 6–8, which is open to the public, will be of particular interest to tourists.

Alentejo in November: Hot Air Balloon and Wine Festival

The Portuguese region of Alentejo hosts two notable events in November. From November 7–12, the International Hot Air Balloon Festival—which has been held since 1997—takes place here, featuring flights and public displays. From November 11–15, the annual Grape and Wine Festival is held in the town of Borba.

The festival in Borba combines wine tastings, regional cuisine, entertainment, crafts, and products from local producers. The region is often mentioned in forecasts of next year’s tourism trends, so a trip in November offers a chance to experience the Alentejo before a potential influx of tourists.

What to book in advance for winter 2026–2027?

November is a good time to book winter trips: Christmas markets, sun-soaked getaways, and the ski season. To visit major markets without the December crowds, choose the last week of November, as Strasbourg, Nuremberg, and Prague shift into festive mode toward the end of the month. The Canary Islands and Madeira remain popular destinations for winter sun.

Trips for Christmas and New Year’s are often difficult to organize and expensive, so booking early helps you find better deals. For skiers, the 2026–2027 season will see the opening of a number of new Alpine hotels and lodges, including The First Cortina in Italy, The Ski Lodge in Verbier, as well as new properties in Morzine and Le Ménuires.
