Residence permit on assured income
An income-assured residence permit may be granted to a person who has assets outside the Fiji Islands that can be realized at the request of the Director of Immigration. Permits in this category are usually issued to individuals who are unlikely to wish to work in the Fiji Islands. They can invest in any business approved by the Fiji Islands Trade and Investment Bureau.
The Policy for Residence Permit with Guaranteed Income is set out below:
- the principal applicant must be at least 45 years old and have health insurance;
- the principal applicant must have a guaranteed income and must not be seeking employment in the Fiji Islands;
- upon approval of the application, the principal applicant must deposit the amount of USD 100,000.00 into a resident's local bank account;
- if the main applicant has purchased real estate in the Fiji Islands, the F$100,000.00 may be waived, but documentary evidence of the purchase and value of the real estate is required;
- an additional F$30,000.00 for a family of two (2) or F$40,000.00 for a family of up to five (5) members must be deposited annually into the resident's local bank account; and
- the permit holder must obtain permission from the Department of Immigration for any repatriation of funds from the country before the application will be considered by the Reserve Bank of Fiji.
The following documents must be attached to the application for obtaining a residence permit on assured income:
- criminal record certificate for the applicant and spouse from the countries of their citizenship and/or residence where they have resided for twelve (12) months or more during the last ten (10) years;
- medical reports regarding the applicant, his wife, and children under the age of 3 months;
- a certificate from a competent authority or documentary evidence acceptable to the Director of Immigration that the applicant has sufficient knowledge of the English language;
- confirmation of the availability of funds and any guaranteed income, as well as a current valuation of other assets; and
- the required application fee. The current application fee is F$477.00.
Investor residence permit for 3 years
Available to non-citizen investors participating in a business project approved by the Fiji Islands Trade and Investment Bureau (FTIB) for a minimum of F$50,000. FTIB approval is given through the issuance of a Foreign Investment Certificate (FIC).
Investor residence permit for 7 years
Issued to foreign investors who can provide evidence that at least F$250,000 has been transferred offshore and invested in the local economy as part of their investment portfolio.
Citizenship by birth
Those born in Fiji are granted citizenship if the parents do not have diplomatic immunity or neither parent is a citizen of Fiji.
Citizenship by origin
Those born outside the Fiji Islands to at least one Fijian parent can apply for citizenship.
Citizenship by naturalization
People over the age of 18 can apply for naturalization if they have been lawfully present in Fiji for at least 5 of the 10 years preceding the application.
Pursuant to section 11(2) of the Fiji Citizenship Ordinance 2009, renunciation of primary citizenship is not required.
Citizenship by registration
The following categories of persons can obtain citizenship through registration:
- those born outside the Fiji Islands to at least one Fijian parent;
- minors adopted by a citizen of Fiji;
- minors born to parents who became citizens after the birth of the child.
Citizenship by marriage
People who are married to a Fijian national can apply for citizenship if they have been lawfully present in Fiji for at least 3 of the 5 years preceding the application.
Dual citizenship. Dual citizenship is allowed after the Fiji Citizenship Ordinance 2009. A person who has acquired the citizenship of one or more countries is not restricted from applying for and obtaining Fijian citizenship by registration or naturalization.
