Health care in Fiji
Healthcare standards vary widely in Fiji. Of the 25 hospitals in Fiji, there are 4 public hospitals: two on the main island of Viti Levu and two on Vanua Levu. The largest and oldest hospital is the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) in Suva, while the second largest is the Nadi District Hospital. Both of these hospitals are located in Vita Levu. Two smaller hospitals - Labasa Hospital and Savusavu - are located in Vanua Levu.
In rural areas, the quality of care and treatment is considered lower.
Many private medical hospitals are located on the islands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
Oceania Hospital is the largest private hospital in Fiji. The hospital offers many medical services such as imaging, laboratory medicine, cardiology and CT. Another private hospital is Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH). It is a newly opened hospital in 2017 that has modern equipment.
CDC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Fiji: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chicken pox, shingles, pneumonia, flu.
Medical evacuation plan
It is important for a foreigner or traveler to consider evacuation options from Fiji in the event of an emergency or for necessary treatment that private hospitals and medical centers cannot provide.
A child born in Fiji receives citizenship, but there are exceptions:
- parents have diplomatic immunity
- neither parent is a citizen of Fiji (requires at least one parent to be a citizen of Fiji for a child to obtain citizenship at birth)
