You enter on a tourist visa and then apply to the Ministry. This visa is indefinite and does not require an annual extension.

Required documents to apply for a pension visa include:

• Interpol permit - International ticket 
• Receipt of the paid application 
• Passport (you will need to download a page with personal data and a page with an entry stamp in PDF format)
• A letter from your retirement fund or social insurance stating that you receive a monthly income of at least 1000 dollars (plus 500 dollars per dependent) or the equivalent in any other currency. This letter requires an apostille in the relevant state institution in the country of origin or the country that issued it. Once in Peru, the document must be translated into Spanish by a certified translator. (*)
• A statement that your pension comes to Peru through the banking system; see the sample letter on the page
• Police clearance, criminal record, and verification of court cases issued in the country of origin and, if the applicant lived in another country before coming to Peru, in the country of residence for the last 5 years
• An application under oath issued by a notary in Peru, stating that you want to apply for a rentista visa and that you can fulfill the requirements and are not going to work.

The main requirement for an investment visa to Peru is a capital investment of 500,000 Peruvian currencies in a company registered in Peru. This investment must be a one-time bank transfer that is made directly from a bank account in the name of the investor/visa applicant. At the same time, the business plan must be presented to the company and certified by a local certified economist as viable. Finally, the investor/visa applicant must employ a minimum of (5) local employees during the first year of operation.

• Professional and academic certificates
• Certificate of the registrar of companies
• Documents confirming the position and salary
• Employment contract
• Original and photocopy of passport
• Letter confirming work and salary
• Two passport-sized photos.

Upon your arrival in Peru, immigration documents must be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lima. After that, the documents must be translated into Spanish by a government-approved translator. You may need to have an interview with Interpol.

After maintaining any visa in Peru for three years, foreigners can apply for a permanent resident visa, which provides for indefinite residence in the country. Once approved, this visa must be renewed every five years. At this stage, you can also apply for citizenship and a second passport.

There are three ways to obtain Peru citizenship:

• be born in Peru
• marry a citizen of Peru and reside in Peru for at least two years; or 
• legally reside in Peru for three years. You must provide proof of annual income of at least 42,000.00 soles (approx. 12,500.00 dollars) and pass a written exam in Peruvian history, geography, civic education, and current events.

Here are the requirements specified by the Government of Peru: 

1. Write a statement addressed to the President of Peru

2. You must be at least 18 years old, have 3 years of legal residence in Peru, and spend at least 183 days a year in the country unless you are granted a special permit from Migraciones.

3. Birth certificate with apostille or legalized by the Consulate of Peru or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru.

4. Provide your carné de extranjería with proof of payment of the annual fee for foreigners, proof of legal residence, and a photocopy of your passport.

5. Hand over all the necessary documents and income statement

6. Interpol certificate

7. Declaration of health, home address, and police clearance in Peru or elsewhere

8. Take an exam with questions about Peru

Criminal record:  You can only apply for Peru citizenship if you have a completely clean criminal record in Peru and beyond. You need to present an Interpol certificate and make a statement under oath

Vocational education: it is not necessary to have a higher education. You just need to prove that you have the required income of 12,670 dollars per year. Compared to international standards, this is not much. However, when you consider that the average annual income in Peru is only 4500 dollars, it looks a little different.

Knowledge of Spanish: You need at least an intermediate level of Spanish because the interview will be conducted in Spanish. 

The whole process from the delivery of all documents to obtaining Peruvian citizenship takes one year.
