Greece and Egypt have announced plans to strengthen bilateral cultural relations through a series of events, including the joint organisation of the Egyptian Culture Week in Athens in 2024.

The announcement follows a recent meeting in Athens between Greek Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni and Egyptian Ambassador to Greece Omar Amer Youssef.

Plan for the Egyptian Culture Week in Greece

The Egyptian Culture Week in Athens is expected to be a major event that will showcase the rich and diverse culture of Egypt. A variety of events are planned, including art exhibitions, concerts, dance performances and film screenings.

As Egypt is one of the oldest civilisations in the world, next year's event will provide an opportunity for Greeks to get acquainted with the best examples of Egyptian culture.

In addition, during the meeting in Athens, Ambassador Youssef invited Minister Mendoni to Egypt to attend the opening of the newly renovated Museum of Greco-Roman Civilisation in Alexandria in early October. The Ambassador also invited her to attend the inauguration of the new Archaeological Museum in Cairo in early 2024.

For her part, the Greek Minister of Culture promised to visit Egypt in the near future to meet with her Egyptian counterpart Nevine Al-Kilani for further discussions. She also thanked the Ambassador for Egypt's crucial support in inscribing Zagora on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

According to the Greek Ministry of Culture, Greece and Egypt attach great importance to protecting their cultural heritage from illicit trafficking. The two countries are also set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on trilateral cooperation with Cyprus ahead of a joint summit in 2023.
