The top ten universities in the world for 2027 consist of seven American and three British institutions. - University of Oxford, United Kingdom — 1 (1);

- University of Cambridge, United Kingdom — 5th (tied for 3rd);
- Harvard University, USA — 6th (tied for 5th);
- California Institute of Technology, USA — 7 (7);
- Imperial College London, UK — 8 (8);

Tsinghua University and Other Asian Universities in the Top 15
Tsinghua University in China took the highest position among Asian universities—11th place. It moved up one spot after three years in 12th place and surpassed ETH Zurich in Switzerland. Thus, Asia’s leader now ranks higher than the best university in continental Europe. Peking University took 13th place, while the National University of Singapore (NUS) climbed two spots to 15th. For the first time, three Asian institutions made it into the top 15.
Tsinghua’s rise was driven primarily by an increase in the number of international researchers and students. The university’s international research co-authorship rate is holding it back, and a similar situation has arisen at Peking University.

Chinese Universities in the 2027 Rankings: How Many Are in the Top 200?
Seventeen Chinese universities made it into the top 200 of the 2027 THE rankings. Over the previous three editions, starting with the 2024 rankings, this number remained unchanged at 13 institutions. This year, 71% of Chinese universities in the top 200 improved their rankings. Overall, Chinese universities improved most of their metrics, although they lost points in research strength and international co-authorship.
Hiroshima University Professor Futao Huang attributes these changes to the restructuring of China’s international research ties. According to him, the number of joint publications with researchers from the U.S. and other Western countries has decreased due to geopolitical tensions, research security concerns, export controls, and caution on the part of researchers on both sides. Domestic scientific collaboration in China has expanded significantly during this time.

Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan: Changes in Ranking Positions
Singapore strengthened its position in the ranking thanks to two universities. NUS rose to 15th place, while Nanyang Technological University moved up from a tie for 31st to 28th. Both institutions improved their results primarily due to their growing reputation. Malaysia entered the top 200 and significantly improved its internationalization metrics, particularly the number of international students and staff. This reflects the government’s policy of transforming the country into a global education hub.
Japanese universities lost ground. The University of Tokyo dropped to 27th place, and Kyoto University to a tied 62nd, each falling one spot, despite government investments in improving the quality of education. The Tokyo Institute of Science, established in 2024 following the merger of two institutions, dropped nearly 20 spots but remained in the top 200.

Why Are Asian Universities Catching Up to the U.S. and the U.K.?
The combined average overall scores of the U.S. and the U.K. are only slightly higher than the combined scores of China, Singapore, and Hong Kong. English-speaking countries maintain an advantage in international criteria: the proportion of international faculty and students, and international co-authorship. The Asian trio is significantly stronger in sector-specific indicators, particularly in revenue from industry collaboration. East Asia and the ASEAN region have improved their performance in research and teaching, so the gap is gradually narrowing.
The following indicators had the greatest impact on the change in overall scores in 2027 (average change relative to the rest of the world):
- United States and the United Kingdom: research strength (−0.18), ratio of PhDs to staff (−0.10), citations, and research quality (both −0.06);
- China, Hong Kong, and Singapore: research reputation (+0.13), teaching reputation and research quality (both +0.08), citation rates and research impact (both +0.06).

University Mergers: How Did They Affect the 2027 Rankings?
The number of merged institutions in the rankings has been steadily increasing: there were four in 2017, 30 in the 2026 edition, and now 35. Countries are resorting to mergers due to aging populations and financial difficulties. The results of such mergers are still mixed. Simon Marginson, a professor at the University of Bristol, believes that merged institutions need at least a decade to establish themselves and gain recognition for their new brand.
Here’s how the rankings of individual merged universities have changed:
- The University of Adelaide (Australia) dropped from 133rd to a shared 141st place;
- City St George’s, University of London (United Kingdom) remained in the 326–350 range;
- Université Paris-Cité (France) dropped to a tied 201st place and fell out of the top 200 for the first time since 2020;
- Institut Polytechnique de Paris (France) moved from a tied 68th to a tied 75th place.
