Abandoning remote work: why 90% of companies will return to offices by the end of 2024?
The overwhelming majority of companies that have already returned to the office believe that this has led to increased revenues, productivity, and employee retention. More than 90% of companies plan to return employees to the office by the end of 2024. Find out if most companies actually plan to track employees' time back in the office and how employees are responding
The topic of returning employees to offices is becoming more and more relevant, and although many studies say that often employees become more productive working remotely, in general, working in the office is more organized. That is why a large number of managers regret that they did not switch to work in the office prematurely and plan to do so in the coming months.
To find out how workplaces will be organized in the future, ResumeBuilder.com conducted an online survey of 1,000 office workers age 25 and older who have a household income of at least $75,000 a year and work for a company with 11 or more employees.
We will talk about the plans of corporations for 2024 below.
Companies are increasingly returning to offices
During the pandemic, many companies gave up office space, but in 2024, companies plan to return to this idea, according to the information from the interviewed respondents:
- 64% of companies have a physical workplace;
- 20% plan to open it by the end of 2024;
- 11% plan in 2025 or later;
- only 4% never plan to have a physical workplace.
Also, business owners increasingly require employees to come to the office, in particular:
- in 51% of corporations, some or even all workers work full-time or have a mixed form of work;
- 39% plan to do so by the end of 2024;
- 8% – until 2025 or later.
It is worth noting that most companies focus on a hybrid schedule, which allows remote work on tasks that can be performed independently and promotes collaboration while working in the office.
Also, among the interviewed businessmen were those who returned to work in the office after the first easing of the quarantine. The vast majority of respondents in this group say they have seen improved incomes and increased worker productivity since the recovery.

Most companies plan to monitor employees' presence in the office
Google recently implemented a policy that tracks employees' badges to make sure they're working in the office. And although the corporation faced a lot of hate, many companies plan to do the same:
- 83% of respondents whose companies have returned to the office say they now track employee attendance;
- 70% of respondents whose companies plan to reopen in 2024 also plan to track employee attendance.
And although the plans are quite ambitious, we should not forget that the end of 2024 is still a long way off and perhaps not everyone will be able to implement their plans.
How do employees react to a possible return to offices?
Overall, the results were mixed, with some employees welcoming the changes, citing improved communication, while others expressed concerns about commuting and work-life balance.
That's why, in order to encourage employees to return to the office, 72% of business leaders say the company will offer commuting benefits, 57% will consider childcare assistance, and 64% will provide food for employees. At the same time, 28% of employers plan to threaten to fire employees who refuse to return to the office.
So, surveys and expert forecasts say that 2024 will be the period of return to office work.
